Wanaka Must Dos after a Day on the Slopes
Rain or shine, summer or winter, ice-cream makes for the perfect finish to a day of skiing or snowboarding. It’s cold, creamy and just delicious. Wanaka has two amazing ice-cream shops Patagonia and Black Peak. Patagonia is also a chocolate shop and offers classic Patagonian handmade chocolates also. It's located opposite the skate park on Dungarvon Street, near the lake front. I would describe Patagonia ice-cream as luxurious, sweet and indulgent. My favourite flavour being the Tramontana. It’s like a powder day in edible form – just the best thing ever!
Black Peak is your other ice-cream option, which offers more of a classic style ice-cream. With more basic flavours than Patagonia this ice-cream will suit everyone, even the little ones. You can find Black Peak on the lake front, just tucked in a little near the Kai Café. I highly recommend their lemon sorbet as a refreshing finish to your day.
A Stroll along Wanaka's Picturesque Lakefront
Lake Wanaka has a walking/biking track that runs along the lake in both directions from the township. Walking or biking provides an excellent way to recover your muscles after a hard day on the slopes. By doing light exercise your muscles are able to remove the toxins (lactic acid) build up that is created while you are skiing or snowboarding. If you are interested in multi-tasking, you might even like to eat an ice-cream while you walk and take in the breathtaking view! Don't forget to take your camera too!
See a Movie in one of our Quirky or Luxury Cinemas
Nothing is better to rest those ski legs than relaxing while you watch a movie. There are two cinemas in Wanaka, Cinema Paradiso and Ruby’s. Paradiso is located by the back entrance of the New World, and is a fun and quirky cinema. You can order dinner when you arrive and they will have it ready for you at half time. That’s right, they have a half time just like to good old days! With mainly couches, sofas and even a car for seats, this cinema is a must go to.
Ruby’s Cinema is located out by the Lone Star restaurant. This makes it easy to go for a meal then hit up a movie after. The Lone Star restaurant provides a free shuttle service to get you there and back safely. Ruby’s cinema is a more luxurious cinema experience, offering the most comfortable deluxe seats. Both Cinemas do get quite busy, so make sure you phone ahead and reserve your seats. You can find the movie schedule in the local messenger paper, or ask at the front desk of your accommodation.
