Girl's Snowboarding History Made
Girls snowboarding history was made last week, when Elena Hight landed a double backside alley-oop rodeo at the X-Games Aspen. This was the first time a girl has landed a ‘double’ in snowboard halfpipe competition, and it was awesome!
I was lucky enough to be watching the women’s halfpipe final live on ESPN at injured kiwi snowboarder, Bex Sinclair’s house in Wanaka. It was great to be watching it with company who appreciated the performance. The snowboarding was hands down the best girls snowboard competition I have ever seen! Elena had a great run topped by landing her double trick, and scored a 90.00 setting her up for what looked like a gold. Elena Hight
Kelly Clark the last rider to drop, then had the best run I have seen her ever land. Which included a frontside 1080, cab 720, to frontside 900 combo all of which were massive at about 14 feet out of the halfpipe! To put that in perspective, look over now at your (average) doorframe, now imagine another door frame stacked on top of that, now add a little bit more height too – that is how high she was going! Awesome!
Kelly’s score took ages to come through and we waited in anticipation, a 90.33 finally showed on the scoreboard and Kelly Clark took home her third Gold medal in a row at X-Games. It was incredible riding from all the girls, and the progression of women’s snowboarding has just made a huge leap forward.
Click here to see a nice 3-minute wrap video from X-Games, including the girl's runs at the end.
