Christmas Means Snow?

Only a couple more days till Christmas and we are looking forward to spending the day in Wanaka on the deck in the sun, with a champagne brunch and BBQ for dinner. It is hard to beat a typical New Zealand Christmas!

People from the Northern Hemisphere seem to think that it is very strange to celebrate Christmas in the summer time. Obviously if you are from somewhere hot then you never even think twice about it. I never wondered when I was growing up why all the Christmas cards had snow on them, or why all the Christmas carols mentioned ‘Winter Wonderlands’! In fact, I don’t even think it was until I spent my first winter season in the snow at Keystone, Colorado in 98/99 that I even considered that Christmas would be anything other than hot.

All this begs the question to me (I am obviously not working hard enough) as to why Christmas is even related to snow in the first place? As far as I can see, the initial reason for Christmas (as opposed to the modern reason of getting drunk and eating too much) was to celebrate the birth of Jesus…who was born in  Bethlehem...which is in the middle of the desert…which is in the middle of Israel….which according to the internet is a nice and sunny 22 degrees Celsius today. It’s not exactly cold enough for snow. Maybe 2000 years ago it was? None of the Wise Men seemed to be wearing skis though, and Mary certainly didn’t snowboard to the manger to give birth. She wasn’t even pulled there by a donkey and sleigh.

Simon tells me that it is because Santa comes from the North Pole, which is obviously a very snowy place…but how did Santa come in to all of this?

When it all comes down to it, I don’t really care. Christmas is nice in the sun enjoying fresh fruit, a steak on the BBQ, and some cold bevvies, but it is just as good spending it somewhere snowy and cold where you can ski and snowboard all day long, followed by a mulled wine in front of a nice log fire.

New Years Eve however is another matter!

I hope that you all have a great Christmas whether you are celebrating it by skiing, snowboarding, or BBQing!
